Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association

Est. 2023, the Pine State Pistoleros is Maine's Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association club. A fast paced sport, based on both equestrian and target shooting skill that's fun for spectators! Members of every ability are welcome, and we're always recruiting new participants. There is a Men's Division, a Women's Division, and a Senior's Division, with Classes 1-6 in each of those divisions. There is also a Wrangler Class for youth riders 11 years and younger.

Broken into divisions allowing youth, beginners, adults, and seniors the opportunity to compete, dressed in late 1800's period clothes. Each stage of competition incorporates engaging targets (balloons) with blanks, in both technique and speed. Two sets of 5-balloons are included in each course, and can include gates, barrels, and a rundown. A run involves two single action revolvers, and upper level competition can include rifle, shot gun, or Cavalry runs. Gun leather and cowboy/cowgirl dress can all be customized to each rider's taste (following CMSA rules), and add to the excitement!

The Dirigo Buckle Series is an annual triple crown event here in the State of Maine. Shooters compete for the cumulative fastest time in their division, with a chance to win a unique buckle! Other prizes at each event are also awarded, including possible paybacks, rider raffles, clean shooter payout, and 3D prizes. Each event's prize/payout/payback information can be found on the CMSA website's registration & details page: www.cmsaevents.com
You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram and X.

Pre-1898 (and replicas of) single action six shooter revolvers are used with black powder filled .45LC caliber cartridges. These blanks can break the balloons on course at approximately 8 to 20 feet. Examples are: Colt Single Action Army or Bisley Model, Smith & Wesson Schofield, Russian, or Remington Models 1875 & 1890, their reproductions and Ruger Vaqueros, Bisleys or Montados. LIVE ROUNDS ARE PROHIBITED at all events. Wranglers may shoot from the ground, in a stationary position only, although they do ride their course. Advanced youth may ride with cap guns, or unloaded revolvers to "engage" the balloon targets.
We offer club clinics for riders to see if they have what it takes to be a mounted shooter! Each spring there are a number of beginner clinics for riders of all ages. No equipment is needed to try out mounted shooting for the first time, we supply everything you need, just bring your horse and your tack. Horses and ponies of any breed are welcome. Our intro/beginners clinics allow participants to begin desensitizing their horses to gunfire, gun safety, sport rules and regulations, basic drills, attire, how to ride a pattern, and resources to learn more! Practices throughout the season are offered for club members, helping both horse and rider gain experience and prepare for competitions.
All clinics, events and competitions will be announced on our Facebook page. Register for clinics at: pinestatepistoleros@gmail.com Register for competitions at: https://www.cmsaevents.com/events/
